Curriculum Intent Statement
At Derwent we recognise children’s individuality and the challenges they face. Therefore, reflected in the heart of our curriculum design, we ensure that all children have an entitlement to rich and stimulating learning overflowing with first-hand experiences relevant to their needs.
Our curriculum is built on the principle of ensuring pupils ‘know more and remember more’. Consequently, there is a well-considered build-up of knowledge content within discrete subjects and also across a context specific curriculum. We ensure that knowledge components underpin key skills to equip pupils to perform these skills at an increasingly more complex level.
Precise vocabulary is selected and purposefully revisited throughout to ensure that this ‘sticks’, allowing the school to counteract the poverty of language and word gaps that many of our children face. From the very beginnings every opportunity is explored to foster an early love of reading to support our pupils’ navigation of the journey from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’. This prepares pupils academically, socially and emotionally for now and in the future.
Children will understand the importance of keeping safe, being both mentally and physically healthy, and form positive relationships. These attributes will allow children to make positive contributions to the school and prepare them to be positive contributors to the local community and beyond. This, coupled with high expectations, enables our children to be the very best version of themselves. The curriculum will give all learners, particularly the most disadvantaged the knowledge and self-discipline to become ‘anything’ and ‘anyone’.

Please note the significant disciplinary and substantive knowledge in all curricular subjects that has been missed or needs repetition/consolidation due to the school closure is highlighted in red.

Autumn 2 – Celebrating differences
Whilst we always try to work with parents to explore their views, we also accept that parents/carers can exercise their right to withdraw their child from some or all of the elements of sex education which go beyond the national curriculum for science. There is no right to withdraw from Relationships Education or Health Education. Teachers will plan appropriate, purposeful education for children who are withdrawn from sex education.
Parents and carers have a right to withdraw their child/ren from all or part of the Religious Education Curriculum. If parents want to exercise this right we ask that you discuss this with a Leader in school.
